Timing

by Woo

I’ve spoken with several folks about how having access to league-wide picks well before 1pm on Sunday would allow them to fade or follow individual players in separate bets.  I think that does add value to the existence of the league.  Just knowing that about half the league is on Indy for week 8 is a decent Indy sell signal.  The opposite type of signals occur too.

However, here is when picks were submitted this week (add two hours to get the EST equivalent — not sure why its Mtn time instead of Pacific like the website)

nflpickemails

7 of 14 emails, including my own (a text from my 859 number) arrived during the last hour.  Guter, as usual, right on time!

Anyway.. if a decent size group wants to, I’d also be in favor of making an earlier deadline.. since I really do think there is valuable handicapping information in the patterns of our league’s picks.  And I’m a big fan of any edge one can get.

2008 Payouts are Set

by Woo

Big ups to the un-named league gambler who finally took 3.5 minutes out of his busy schedule to pony up.  Glad there were no DQ’s.

15 peeps in the league.   14 entries for $200, and commish entry for $100.  so $2900 to go around.

Each winner takes home basically double what the person below them gets paid.

1st Place 55%  $1595
2nd Place 26%  $754
3rd Place 13% $377
4th Place 6% $174

Ghetto rubber band not included.

Payouts Still TBD

by Woo

There are a few folks who have dropped out this season.  And a few new players to take their places.   Not to mention that I only have $$$ from about half of you right now.

Also want to make clear again that I’m getting a $100 entry for my work, rather than the standard $200.

Point is, I have yet to set the final payout structure because of all this uncertainty.  But that will change in the next 6 days.  Payouts will be officially posted before Week 2 (Sunday 9/14).

Guys, get checks or cash to me this week – this is last time I’m going to mention it. Really don’t want to DQ anybody, but am going to run a tight ship.  If you actually want to play, you must get your dough to me by Saturday 9/13.  Next season the absolute payment deadline will be before the season starts.

Good luck with the opener.  Looks like some tough lines out there.

Week 1

by Woo

For Thursday night’s opener, we’ll go with a line of Washington Redskins +4.5 vs NY Giants.

Official Sunday/Monday Week 1 Lines to be posted by Saturday.  On weeks when there’s a Thursday game, I’ll always just post that line, then hold off for the rest until Friday/Saturday.  Don’t want the lines to be too stale by game time, and most shifts occur before Sunday comes around.

I investigated some online sites but came away un-impressed.  So just like always, email your picks to NFL@buckv.com… there is an email link at the top right if you ever forget where to send them.

Click on the “Rules” page to make sure you understand how we work, and email/text/call me  if you have any questions.

2008 Kickoff

by Woo

Are you in this year ? Please leave a comment below…

A few notes:

  • The season kicks off with a Thursday game on Sept 4th.
  • We will gamble all the way to week 17 this year. Wild Card weekend will be for tiebreakers, if theres a tie and the players don’t want to just split. (week 17 was for tiebreaks in the past — and was irrelevant as the pot usually just gets chopped anyway)
  • Stakes are $200 per person again.
  • To expedite the champs getting paid at season’s end, I am going to collect up front and simply send the winners 1 check. Get the $$ to me by Labor Day please, either in person, or mail it to 196 N Hanover Ave, Lexington, KY 40502. ”
    • Note to DC guys: I’m going to the Virginia-USC game, you can settle up there if ya want.
  • “Commissioner” Woodford is getting 1/2 price entry this year.. $100.. compensation for the Excel work, web hosting, calling Tommy at 3:55 most Sundays to remind him to make picks, and of course taking bets by phone from Coach Bo 15 out of 17 weeks while he travels the soccer circuit with his kids.
  • Just FYI there may be a few additional gamblers this year.. especially if anyone ends up dropping out. I invited Brandon Sumpter and I believe he’s in. Remmy has expressed an interest (and should be a good addition of dead money to the pot!) :) My & Bo’s friend Andy Russ is another possibility.

Playoff Time

by Woo

I know it’s only January, but are yall ready to fill out your brackets? NFL, that is..

2007-2008-nfl-bracket.pdf

The good folks at fantasyfootballxtreme.com (who i found through Google) were slick enough to create this bracket that tells/shows you where the wildcard game winners will travel to depending on who wins each game. I’ve gotta at least link to them to give some credit..

You are of course not obligated to play. Just like the NFL teams, this is a whole new season — and a yet another opportunity to part with cash for gambling failures like myself.

Our rules:

  • $40 to play
  • Scoring per round:
    • Wild Card weekend — 10 points
    • Divisional round — 15 points
    • AFC/NFC Championships — 20 points
    • Super Bowl — 25 points
  • Scoring is cumulative. But you can lose as well as gain points.. not just gain like most NCAA pools. Keeps it similar to our regular season league.
  • Send picksheets to me at least 1 hour before Saturday’s first game if you want to play. (it’s at noon i think).
  • Please note the correct bracket location to write in your Wildcard picks.
  • Either scan and Email at the usual address (link at top right), or fax to me at 603.710.8104.
  • Preliminary Payouts:
    • 3rd Place: Breakeven
    • 2nd Place: 25% of the pot
    • Winner 75% of the pot
    • I may alter this (very early on Saturday), depending on how many people play.. Maybe eliminating breakeven.. I’m planning for around 12 with this setup.
  • The Commish is paying $20 for his entry instead of $40, for doing the grunt work (and handling Bo’s telephone inquiries throughout the playoffs… just kidding brother, keep them coming)

I would wish you all good luck, but after the season just posted, it wouldn’t be sincere..

Rules Amended

by Woo

For the weeks where the NFL plays Thursday games, you can send in more than 1 picks email — 1 with any Thursday games, and 1 for the rest.

I had the 1 email rule last year ’cause I thought it would be too much work.  Screw it, we’re a player-friendly league around here.

Have a good one, Pilgrims.

Greenbacks

by Woo

Josh Cummins didn’t submit picks, and having added Russ we again have 14 players. Still $200 a head, $2800 total.

Payouts:

  • 1st $1500
  • 2nd $800
  • 3rd $300
  • 4th Break even, keeps their own $200

Also wanted to make sure everyone knows we’re only betting thru week 16.. week 17 will be for tiebreakers if necessary.
